BEHIND THE NAME

Henry Shufeldt, a Chicago distiller, built a dynasty after marrying Emeline Egan in 1859. He created a superior distillery, winning a gold medal at the 1878 Paris World’s Fair. He brought his brothers-in-law into the business and built magnificent family homes in Chicago and Oconomowoc.

In 1895, he built the first golf course in Oconomowoc (right in his own backyard), inspiring his young nephews, Chandler and Walter Egan, to take up the sport.

Beginning in 1902, Chandler and Walter became champions, earning their own gold medal, college titles at Harvard, Olympic Gold Medals, Western Amateur titles, USGA Amateur championships, and even an Oconomowoc Open!

And it all began in 1895 in Uncle Henry’s Backyard…
